My Furry Companion

A post for pet parents who understand the comfort and joy of sharing their sewing space with their animal friends.
Picture
This post is dedicated to the memory of Trixie Cat, my precious kitty companion of the last 16 years. Alas, our time together ended with her brief but serious illness and the need to let her quietly go on February 21, 2025.
Picture
My time stamped photo says Trixie came into our home at precisely 9:43 PM on February 13th 2009. After a day browsing booths at our local Home & Garden show, my hubby and I went to take a peek at the activity around the onsite Animal Protective League booth. What a perfect venue for making folks aware of the perfect addition to their home sweet home. Always and ever cat lovers, we had lost our previous furry baby and after a long span without a pet I think we both had hopes of finding the "right one."

Well, we were in the booth for some time but the short version of our soon to be adoption happened rather fast. After looking at lots of cats and not feeling any tugs on our hearts, we came upon a lady holding a tabby kitten. She had taken this adorable kitty out of a crate of three tabby siblings, two short hair and one long hair. They were all beautiful. Before I knew it but she handed her over to me saying "I think you should hold her."

Oh how I wish I had a photo of that moment! That kitten snuggled into my neck and a crowd formed around us with one man in the crowd telling my husband he better buy that cat for me because that cat needed to go home with me. Next thing you know we were signing papers and carrying an APL cat in box made with breathing holes to the car. We scrambled to get to a pet store before closing time on the way home, just making it to get necessary supplies. I should add that she would not tolerate the box but wanted to be back up over my shoulder, nestled into my neck which would prove to be her favorite perch for the next sixteen years. My hubby and I looked at each other wide eyed, delighted but experiencing an "oh my" moment at the same time. We had never raised a kitten together. That little kitten played with a toy mouse until after 1:00 AM, making herself right at home!

Picture
The next day was full of "getting to know you, getting to love you" time for the three of us. I'll never forget how tiny she was!
Picture
To say that we bonded instantly is an understatement. Perfectly content to be indoors all the time, through the years she spent many happy times with me in my sewing space. Even as a kitten, she seemed to know that sewing time meant I would be staying in the same place for a lengthly span of time.
Picture
I sometimes found her in unusual hiding places.
Picture
Trixie liked keeping a watchful eye on my embroidery progress.
Picture
And supervising my sewing space activities from high atop my computer armoire where she managed to get up and down without disturbing a thing.
Picture
She loved being close by, oblivious to my deadlines and need for concentration.
Picture
My shoulder was always her favorite spot. Both in and out of the sewing space, each day included hugs. All I had to do was bend down and more often than not she would jump up and stay for a bit of cuddle time.
Picture
She joined me on occasion while I typed my weekly email note to sewing friends. I gladly used just one hand and enjoyed having her company as I often wrote late at night when the house was quiet.
Picture
We are missing her now and the times I had to shoo her off of sleeping on my fabric seem quite inconsequential.

We had our last hug as I held her close before saying goodbye. I'm forever thankful for Dr. Emily, vet assistant Marrelle, and Sarah at the reception desk. They were all so very kind and compassionate.
Picture
Trixie was a gift form God and we were blessed to have her in our family.

If you are a pet parent and want to share your thoughts or stories about a beloved pet in your sewing space I welcome you to leave your comments below.

So sad to hear of your loss. It is never easy to lose a loved one that is part of your family. We lost our Phoenix furrbaby on February 12th. She was 15 years old and not a day goes by that we don’t think of her or talk about her.

Oh Joanne, I am so sorry that your beloved Trixie is now over the Rainbow Bridge. My sweet kitties are over there with her and it’s too quiet in my sewing room. They would leave their toys for me to find in odd places. My dog just snores at my feet but Venus and Odin were involved in ALL the things. Sending hugs! 🤗

I’m so sorry for your loss. They are our little darlings. I had to put my precious Daphne down December 11,2024. She was my rescue doggie for 12 years. I miss her so much. They are our precious furry children and I know that in Genesis 9:8-17
God lets us know we will see them again when we get to heaven. I do look forward to seeing all of my furry kids again one day. May God give you peace in this time of sorrow.

I cried for a week after losing our two cats. About a week each cat. We adopted those little kittens before kids. I had to put them down at different times but they both lived 22 years. It broke my heart. Nothing will ever replace them. They were completely different personalities. Crazy, so funny, and loving. They were entertainment.I am allergic to cats but I love them anyway. My allergist was not happy with me. I am sorry for your loss Joanne.

Oh Joanne, I’m so sorry.
As I read your post I felt a tug at my heart. Yesterday I went with my brother to a home and garden show in San Antonio. We stopped by the animal rescue area ourselves and I fell in love with the sweetest gray kitty. I knew I couldn’t take him home but boy did I want to. I thought of him today and wondered if someone special gave him a home.
I loved reading of the sweet memories of your sweet kitty.

Dearest Joanne, I am so sorry to hear that your sweet Trixie went over the Rainbow Bridge. Our fur babies are so much a part of our family. Your Trixie was so special and added so much joy to your sewing time! Our Farley was 18 when he left us but such a buddy but more with my husband. He would visit me at the sewing machine if Dave was working late or away - otherwise he was settled on his lap or in the basement with Dave woodworking. Such wonderful memories. You have those wonderful memories too.
Prayers for you and your hubby. Know you will see Trixie again. Love, Christie

Joanne, my heart goes out to you at the loss of your beloved Trixie! My hubby and I adopted siblings in 2006, Simba and Maggie. We had to put Simba down in 2020 as he got very ill. It was very difficult as it was the year of covid and we couldn't go into the vets office to be with him during his last moments. Maggie is still with us, at 18 she is doing rather well. Such a sweet companion! You have wonderful memories of your sweet fur baby. Thank you for sharing with us.

I'm so sorry, Joanne. Our, dog, Bigfoot was 10 when he left us. He was part yellow lab and part great Dane, so, when we got him at about 3 months old, what a fitting name for him. He grew up to be a big dog and followed my husband all over in our timber. They were a perfect pair, so when he got sick an went over the rainbow bridge, we missed him so much. It took about 5 years to decide we needed a dog and I think our son did, too. Our chocolate lab, Cocoa is almost 8 years old and a little sister (from same parents, different litter) of our son and our daughter, those 2 are twins.

So sorry for your loss. I have followed you online and on TV for years. I know there are really no word for these times. I have been through this experience eight times over the last 46 years. Each time was just as difficult as the previous ones. But through them all I remember what one vet said to me. He told me that I had given my cats a better life than could have ever been imagined. Which was probably true since all of them were adopted from shelters. I still miss every one of them every day. I will pray that you find some comfort in remembering the good times and that you got to love and be loved by a wonderful friend.
