Cleveland Clinic is Seeking Help from Sewists to provide Home-made fabric masks for the
Greater Cleveland Community
Greater Cleveland Community
Cleveland Clinic is reaching out to sewists to make masks for our Greater Cleveland area population. Campaign runs from March 30th to April 30th, 2020. Please note, these masks are NOT for use by medical personnel. Below is a quote from a representative of the Clinic. I have underlined important points:
“These donated masks will be used to help reinforce cough etiquette in our community. Cough etiquette, which includes covering your cough, is an important way to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect those around us. These donated masks will not be used by caregivers as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for clinical care.”
If you can help in this effort I'd love to have you join in! My Let's Go Sew friends, and friends of ALKO Sewing Center in Mentor Ohio are working together to get as many masks made as possible to fulfill their request. You'll find essential information below, along with links from Cleveland Clinic.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTES: Representatives from the Clinic asked me to pass along this additional information:
UPDATE! The Cleveland Clinic is eager to get masks made. They will accept a variety of home-sewn fabric masks. Below are several styles you may want to consider making, depending on your skills and supplies you have at hand. You may use other fabric mask patterns if you have a preferred method.

Masks made at home may also be mailed to Cleveland Clinic, 8937 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 44195.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTES: Representatives from the Clinic asked me to pass along this additional information:
- The clinic will sanitize masks for final delivery to the public. Please put completed masks in a plastic bag for delivery.
- Please follow general directions in provided below. You will also find links to popular mask directions. Some instructions include the use of one quarter inch elastic, which is in short supply right now. You can follow the same basic instructions and substitute four self-fabric ties measuring 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch wide by 16-inches long, in place of the elastic. Place these ties in the exact location where the elastic would go. You can also substitute bias tape or twill tape for the ties. DO NOT use ribbon! It is too slippery.
- Use good quality quilt weight 100% fabric for both inside and outside of mask.
- Pre-wash fabric in hot water before sewing. Use detergent, NO fabric softener.
