One of the prettiest details you can add to a project is lace or lacy looks.
Picture
Angela Wolf starts the show with the final lesson of the Linda tunic Sew Along and changes the sleeve to lace.
Picture
Her idea for adding sleeves made from lace yardage is ideal for adding a whole new look to this top. I'm thinking this would be a nice addition to a summer jacket as well.

In this particular case Angela mixes a casual knit cuff with the lace sleeve on the blouse. Not necessarily what you might think of for standard styling but when you see the result, I'll think you'll agree that it works!

Next up you'll see my Stitch Stacking tips.

Blending, combining, and stacking decorative stitches adds interest to any project. In this segment you'll see how easy it is to make use of the beautiful decorative stiches built in to your machine.
Picture
I had a lot of fun creating this combination of stitches on the Brother Dream machine. Many machines will have similar capabilities for building a line of decorative stiches with space in between. Check your machine menu for available options.

The idea is pretty simple. I started by creating a combination of stitches, adding straight stitches to create a space between the motifs. Then I went back and added a single motif on top of each of the areas with open space. Using a different thread color really makes the design combination pop!

Here are a few more combinations. For the final project I meant to show a pillowcase finished with rows of stacked stitches. Somehow that got left off the video. Here it is for you to see.

Rebecca Kemp Brent wraps up the show and with a different way to add lace to a sleeve.

Towards the end she shares some beautiful samples of lace made with an embroidery machine. CLICK HERE for Rebecca's detailed instructions for this segment.

More about lace . . .
Making freestanding lace and lace appliqués with an embroidery machine has been one of my favorite techniques for more than two decades. Over the years I've created quite a few garments with this added accent, including the forties style slip dress/nightie shown during It's Sew Easy TV show #906. You can watch this show HERE.

I have multitudes of pieces in my lace stash just waiting to be sewn on to something special. Making machine embroidered lace is a popular topic. There are a lot of both old and new designs that can be considered classics. Watch for a future blog post on this subject.

I'd love to hear your comments, thought, and stories about lace that may be in your stash.
Is machine embroidered lace a favorite technique for you too? Or, is this something you have not yet tried? Do you have lace in your stash? Feel free to leave your comments below!

LOVED this show and blog. It's right where I have been wanting to stretch my creative muscles.
I have a ready-to-wear blouse that has a lace bodice. I would like to make a matching lace insert for down the sleeve. Suggestions about how to copy the bodice lace?

Hi Judy! Glad to know you enjoyed the info here :-) Your blouse idea sounds wonderful! However, it's a little tricky to answer without seeing a photo. I'm not sure how you would get lace to match what is on your blouse. Here are some possible ideas for making something to coordinate: You could consider making your sleeve trim from netting, cotton or nylon, adding ready made lace trim on top of it and then attaching it to your sleeve. I have also stabilized cotton netting with liquid stabilizer and then added rows of decorative stitches to create a lacy look. Cotton netting is more durable but harder to find and more costly than nylon. Having said that, since the nylon type is inexpensive it is good for experimentation. Here is a link to a tip sheet for the liquid stabilizer: https://www.letsgosew.com/tip-sheet---liquid-stabilizers.html
Hope this helps. Be sure to reach out again if you need more help or you want to send me a photo.

I love lace. I occasionally like to add organza when I stitch out a free standing lace design. It adds a little more sparkle and shimmer..

Hi Sue! Thanks for writing :-) I love lace too! Your idea for adding organza is a good one! It comes in so many beautiful colors and really does add shine and sparkle!

Hi Joanne, I'm getting back into sewing, now retired with twin b/g toddler grandkids. I've got 3 machines 2 great 40+yo Singer's and 10yo average
White that does zigzag. Definitely want a Brother but wondering if I can get great straight sewing options on a machine with embroidery. Never embroidered before but want to try.
What Brother are you using in the 1801 show? You couched on the back of a quilted vest which looked terrific.
Thanks in advance and have a great holiday!
Gina

Hi Gina! I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I thought I posted a reply several days ago but it seems the internet "ate" it :-0

Let me try to answer your questions. First, on show 1801 I was using the Brother Luminaire XP1 machine which is their top of the line combination sewing and embroidery machine. Currently, that is the only machine that has the upgrade package which includes yarn embroidery designs. If you are looking for something that sews and embroiders, there are really quite a few Brother combination sewing AND embroidery models. They would all have a great menu of sewing stitches, both utility stitches and decorative stitches. Some would have the option for changing over to a straight stitch throat plate and foot for the very best straight stitching. Since the zigzag plate is standard on machines the left needle position is the next best thing to having a straight stitch throat plate and foot. I would suggest you visit a local Brother dealer, take along fabrics that you use regularly, and test drive a variety of machines based on your budget. You may even find pre-owned machines that suit you taste and your budget. Please let me know if you need any more help or have more questions. I'm happy to help in any way I can :-)
